About
Liquorice Allsorts Consulting is led by Kate McPhee, with occasional assistance from a subject-expert Associate. Kate brings nearly 30 years of experience working with small clubs and associations. Her consultancy offers affordable, practical, no-frills governance training, advice, and support to small not-for-profit organisations, helping them operate more efficiently and effectively—with less stress and less mess!
Kate’s business grew from her own voluntary work which started when she was juggling study, home renovations and four children with stints in local government and state parliament thrown in for good measure. While she’s earned formal qualifications along the way, her most important skills and insights have been developed through informal learning or trial and error working with hundreds of client organisations experiencing the best and the worst of community management.
Kate has also worked with government and large not-for-profit organisations to project-manage the establishment, change in legal structure, merger or dissolution of more than 40 small associations and co-operatives.
Kate’s work is focused on supporting small not-for-profit associations facing governance and operational challenges. These organisations often face issues like limited funding, difficulties in attracting and retaining skilled volunteer Committee members, running their meetings effectively and managing essential compliance tasks. The intense competition from larger entities for grants and donations makes it tough for local associations to gain visibility for their positive community impact.
Her latest publication, the updated and expanded Just A Tick – A Best Practice Survival Guide for Committees and Boards of Management, draws on three decades of hands-on experience, offering Plain English explanations, checklists and diagrams to help small organisations identify opportunities, overcome challenges and kick goals for their members and their communities.
Kate is also the Principal Industry Consultant for Clubs SA’s Club Development Program, launched in 2024 to enhance the governance, operations, and leadership of both licensed and unlicensed clubs across South Australia.
